Own a car or rent a car?

Post by vincen » Tue, 29 Jan 2002 00:45:21

How much am I looking at for a budget used car plus all the paper work?

I was going to rent a car for up to 2 weeks... isn't that kind of money
close to getting a old car?

What kind of car will be be expecting for let say... $1000 to $2000?
Or can someone recommend a reasonable reliable car at no more than $4000.

Please also let me know how much are the road tax, insurance and also
transfer fees... err... is insurance complusary in NZ?

Hi Vincent
2 years ago i rented a car Holden commodore 3.8l V6 not a new one but we
drove that car for 2 1/2 weeks without problems.
we paid for the whole time 800aud$ including full coverage ( 500aud$ own
risk) we had an average consume about 10l/100km.
it was a small garage in Woodend 50km north off Tulamarine ( Melbourne
airfield).

Are you looking for Australia or NZ?

You can get a car with unlimited km. for around AUD$50 a day; but a well
used car in Australia/NZ is the same as anywhere else - ya takes your
chances, and then you have to get rid of it at the end of the trip (or store
it, as I did).  Australian cars come with transferable registrations which
have varying periods left on compulsory third party (i.e. bodily liability)
only.  They do NOT cover third party property or damage to your own car, you
have to add those on by yourself (and can be difficult and expensive to
arrange for short-term travelers).  Check out tradingpost.com.au and you'll
get an idea of what you're looking at.

And used car dealers are the same as anywhere else...

I am assuming you are coming to NZ from your message. There are a number of
places here where you can get a rental for around NZ$30 a day in the off
season (try Rent-a-dent) and really, for the time you would spend looking
for a car, and then selling it again if you are only here for 2 weeks, I
think that is the way to go. If you are really wanting to buy, then Turners
car auctions is the way to go. Insurance is not compulsary here and the
transfer fee is $9 and paid by the buyer. Road tax is approx NZ$190 per year
and can be bought as a minimum of three month blocks. Most second hand
vehicles will have some tax still on them.
Where in NZ are you arriving? I may be able to help with a cheap rental firm
as "I have friends"  *grin*

I would just rent for 2 weeks. I've known people trying to sell their car
before leaving, and at the end had to just drop it off at some dealer's lot
for $100, big loss, and too much hassle for such short time...

I once rented a very old VW Bugs for $30/day in Oz, ran great, no trouble,
had a blast... can't remember the name though...

rent-a-wreck off Kings Cross though...

Are you recommending that I should get a rented car first... then look for
someone that would be selling off their older cars... I really don't mind
that...
But you know... I sometimes got this feeling that... those cars in the
caryard 'look' better... haahaa

Anyway, I will be studying in The University of Canterbury for 2 years...
anyone got any idea where the uni is in Christchurch... how far or close is
it from any interesting places?

Also... I heard that... it might snow in the city of Christchurch... is that
possible?

Christchurch is easy enough to get around by bus to look at cars.
Perhaps rent for a week or two whilst searching for a vehicle.

The Uni is located at Ilam, not far out of the city centre and well
serviced by buses.  It's a nice campus [being an ex- Uni Canterbury
myself].  Parking can be a pain in the ***unless your there very
early in the morning.

Buying a car - try the Buy, Sell & Exchange mag which comes out on a
Friday.   There is Turners Auctions but you need to be very careful
about buying a car - read the very fine print on their auction
details.  Probably the cars in your price range from a dealer will
come without any warranty.   However, many have them checked by the
Automobile Association before being offered for sale and will have a
report available.
Check out:  http://www.travelOK.net/
which has info on buying a used car; paperwork etc.

If you buy privately, having cash will more often than not, give you
an edge in a transaction.

Insurance is not compulsory.  If you do buy, seriously consider taking
out third-party insurance which will cover damage to another vehicle
and/or property.
Cars in NZ are subject to a 6 monthly Warrant of Fitness [WOF]
inspection.

It can snow in Christchurch from time to time but a big snowfall is
quite rare.

www.purenz.com  may be a good site for you to peruse.

The city centre is where ARTS CENTERE is written - just to the right
of the Botanical Gardens.

Own a car or rent a car?

If you are staying for 2 years you would be crazy not to buy a car.
Ownership costs are real low, petrol reasonable and public transport
limited. If you plan to do nothing but attend lectures, buses will suit you
well, but if you want to visit friends, see other parts of NZ or go to
parties untiil the early morning, public transport will be of little use.
