Car break-ins in England

Post by Gary J. Robins » Sun, 17 May 1998 04:00:00

After reading the "Barcelona" and "Spain" theft threads, I am wondering
about whether the same thing goes on in England.  Specifically, I am
thinking about hopping a train to Carlisle, renting a car there, and
immediately driving off to see Brampton and Hadrian's Wall that afternoon
before heading down to the Lake District.  I will thus have my luggage
with me in the car.  My question is, if I park the car somewhere in
Brampton or near Hadrian's Wall and get out to see the Wall, how likely is
it that my car's trunk will be broken into while I am out and about?
There are of course no guarantees in life, I just want to avoid doing
something stupid if "everyone knows" that rental cars are easy to spot and
tend to get broken into in that area.  Please forgive me if this seems a
stupid question to those from that area; I have no idea what it's like.

Several years ago our car was broken into at Chester. This was in the parking lot of the hotel, we
did not discover this until we got to the landrymat to do our dirty washing, this was the only the
item in the car, and it was stolen, smelly socks and all.

Not very likely, as long as you leave nothing in the seating area of the
car.  We were warned time and again to leave *ALL* clothing, cameras,
bags, etc. in the trunk at all times.  At that, we found Britain to be a
lot safer and more "civil" than comparable places elsewhere.  Hadrian's
wall is a treat -- hope you have a good time.

Gary,

To echo what someone else already replied, if you leave everything
"luggagy" in the trunk under cover (even the hatchbacks have cargo area
covers) and lock the car, you should probably be OK. I have done so on 6
trips to England with no problems.  The rental cars are not incredibly
obvious--a discreet little sticker in the corner of a window perhaps, and a
current year's number plate (but then that isn't unique...). Enjoy your
trip!

Cheers,

Bill:)

Last year we had the wheels stolen off a rental car in Bath.  It was
in a good neighborhood, but on a street which was quite quiet and
deserted late at night.  We were told by people who worked in the
nearby shops that it was not the first time that sort of thing
happened.

We made two mistakes:  We didn't park on a street which was busy
enough to discourage theft...  and, even more important...  we didn't
refuse the comprehensive insurance offered by the rental company.
That insurance, we found out, had a 150pound deductable; the insurance
offered thru the credit card has no deductable but is not in force AT
ALL if you don't refuse the comprehensive and theft insurance offered
by the rental companies.

hey, it's not that bad,
IF you leave expensive things in cars in view, then they might get
stolen,
but up north out of the big cities it is unlikely to happen if you leave
a normal car.

I leave my car in all places and have done for years, including 'bad'
areas, have left nothing visible and have never lost anything,

It's just luck and a lot less likely to happen than in many parts of the
world
