Ireland car rental vs England car rental

I'd welcome anyone's thoughts. I've read that car rentals in Ireland tend to be
high. We're going (2 of us) for 3 1/2 weeks. Easier (and better) for us to fly
to London. We could take an inexpensive flight over to Dublin and then rent car
for the period OR rent car at London, drive and ferry over to Ireland. Time is
not a problem -- we're retired. I'm getting ready to compare pricing -- but
would welcome comments. Also - CDW required on Irish rentals. How about on cars
rented in England and taken over to Ireland?

Hi Steltzjr

The last time I rented in London, I thought of taking the car to
Ireland.  The guy at the rental desk told me there was a stiff extra
charge, per day, to take an English car into Ireland.  In addition, the
Irish Sea ferries are not cheap.

I don't know how much an Irish rental costs, but I suspect that these
extra costs will quickly erode any savings you earn by skipping the
London to Dublin plane fare.

Yes, car rental in Ireland is higher than many other places. But, having said
that, it will still be cheaper and easier to rent in Ireland that to try to
bring a rental over from England (and you would probably have to return to
England to return the car). My advice: From my 30 years of traveling in
Ireland, Ive found Dan Dooley Rent-A-Car to be excellent for price, quality,

ring her at 1-800-331-9301. If you have a GOLD MASTERCARD you are still
covered for the CDW in Ireland; thats the only card that is still good for
it.

Regarding the Ireland part of the rental, I always waive the CDW.  If you have
a platinum Mastercard (Visa no longer does car rentals in Ireland), they will
cover the CDW for you.  I don't think there'd be a problem, tho, with Visa
coverage if the car was brought over on a ferry.   Hmmmm.  Interesting point,
because Visa used to cover 30 days of Irish rental, MC only 15.

That is gold or better.  I use the platinum card (has higher, free insurance
coverage) with Dan Dooley each year.  But it has to be a MC.
