Gunman Takes Pilots Hostage on Jet
NEW YORK (July 28) - An armed man burst into the***pit of a National Airlines
jet at New York's Kennedy International Airport on Thursday night and was
holding the pilot and co-pilot hostage, authorities said.
The man, armed with a 9 mm handgun, struck shortly after 10 p.m., according to
the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey which operates the New York area
The passengers were taken off the plane, Flight 19 bound for Las Vegas, and
there were no injuries reported, according to the Channel 4 NBC local
The television station quoted witnesses as saying the man, who appeared to be
in his mid-20s, burst through security and entered the***pit.
Passengers told reporters after leaving the plane the gunman appeared to be
''The guy entered the plane... he told me be to be quite. I grabbed my two
friends and we just piled off the plane,'' one unidentified male passenger
''Everybody just started to panic, he just went into the***pit and locked the
door. He came in really angry.''
Another passenger, Kimberley Weil, told CNN: ''We were seated and getting close
to take off... All of a sudden people started screaming and rushing for the
door as fast as they could. No one really knew what was going on.''
Weil said the gunman had apparently ordered an air hostess to lock the aircraft
''The door I believe was broken down by the police and they were able to
evacuate us,'' she said.
