We'll be driving from Scranton PA to ***ia Beach VA on the first Saturday
in June and returning on the following Saturday.  I'm looking for some
real-world advice on what's the best route.  The last time that I was down
that way was 20+ years ago.

At that time I'd make an every-other-week run from Norfolk to New
England--northbound on Friday and southbound on Monday and we'd use route 13
between Norfolk VA and Wilmington DE.  Given the timing, that was the
fastest way since we'd miss the Baltimore-Washington-Richmond traffic.
Traffic wasn't bad at all on the whole DelMarVa peninsula and the trip
across the Bay-Bridge tunnel was worth the toll to save the distance and
time.

I know that a lot has changed since the last time I was down that way so I
was wondering if anyone has a recent experience and advice.  Given that I'll
be traveling on Saturday rather than during the week my guess is that the
fastest way would be to do the trip on I-95, I-64 rather than 13.  Any
thoughts?

Easiest way, avoiding metro areas, is I-81 to Rte 15 south of Harrisburg, to
Rte 17 south of Leesburg, Va, to I-95 at Fredericksburg to I-295 north of
Richmond to I-64 to  Norfolk to I-264 east to VA Beach.

Thanks for the reply!  Do you think that it is best to avoid the metro areas
on a Saturday?  I don't have a problem driving thru or around big cities if
that's the best way to go and if the traffic isn't rush hour stop-and-go.  I
don't have any idea how those cities are on the weekend and just don't want
to waste hours stuck in traffic!  Thanks, again!

I would suggest you follow 13 down the eastern shore; about 7:30 driving
time and 390 miles.  Taking the route down I-64 adds about 60 miles and 40
mins. or so in travel time.  You also must contend with the Hampton Roads
Bridge Tunnel;  not fun on a good day and absolutely horrible in the summer
on week-ends.  1 hour delays are not uncommon during the summer and they are
not included in the times suggested above.  I live in the area and avoid the
HRBT when I can.

If there is an accident on a weekend there will be major tie-ups.
Having to travel on both Washington and Baltimore beltways on a
regular basis, I can say that the people driving during rush hours are
usually more proficient at doing so, because they do it on a regular
basis.  On weekends you get a lot of people like yourself that rarely
drive thos roads, that are not as attentive.  There may be less
traffic, but there are worse drivers, so your chance of catching a
long tie-up is about the same.  At least on Rt 13, you won't be stuck
trying to get to an off ramp to take alternative routes.

You might also consider Rts 1/113, which is much less congested than
Rt 13 and is only 5 miles further.  Besides, the traffic on 95/64 is
always heavy and you have to spend all your driving time looking at
other cars.  I would take the Eastern Shore route even if it took an
hour longer, just to avoid the strain.  When you stop at lights you
cam let go of the wheel and stretch, etc.  If you see something
interesting, you can just pull over.
